Edoardo Mercadante at the Maratona Dles Dolomites

Edoardo made it!

He did complete the tough Marathon of the Dolomites, in 7 hours and 4 minutes, an extraordinary timing.

Edoardo had the idea to join this challenge last August, in spite of having never trained for a cycling race in his life. His intention was to help out Sport Senza Frontiere, along with his cousin Edward and his friend Claudio …. an initiative that touched our hearts and to which I promptly joined with enthusiasm and a certain degree of unconsciousness!

One year seemed a long time, but months went by fast and we eventually ended up very soon, on Sunday, June 30th at 6 am on the starting grid with a temperature of 2 °, along with 10,000 cyclists from all over the world ,facing the mythical Dolomite passes. I want to thank Edoardo for 2 reasons.

One personal, for giving me the opportunity to live a fantastic experience of suffering and beauty shared together with friends. The other reason is for training so hard (getting up at 5 in the morning and riding for hours), in order to get ready for the big challenge and honor the commitment he had made, to support Sport senza Frontiere and help our children. So, really thank YOU! I want to take also the chance to thank all friends who have given value to the Edoardo challenge, with generous donations which mean the NPO's future.

Thanks to everybody

At the end of next month, four riders – two Edoardos, Claudio and Alessandro – will compete in one of the hardest and most demanding races that takes place in the Italian Alps to raise funds to give a better future to the children supported by the charity “Sport without Borders”.

"I was reluctantly convinced to join three fellow crazy Italians in a mountain bike race in the Dolomites at the end of June called the Maratona Dles Dolomites (WWW.MARATONA.IT/EN/). We are all new to cycling.

This bike race is famous for its 4.2 kilometres (2.6 miles) of vertical climbs over 138 kilometres (86 miles) set in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Dolomites – Alta Badia. The most renowned climbs are Passo Giau – a 10 kilometres (6.3 miles) uninterrupted climb with 10% average incline after an 87 kilometres (54 miles) warm up – immediately followed by Passo Valparola for 12.5 kilometres (8 miles). I am not looking forward to it but I’ll give it my all, hoping it will be sufficient to finish!

One of the racers – Alessandro Tappa – is the Founder of Rome based Charity called Sport Senza Frontiere meaning "Sport Without Borders". My wife and I have been sponsoring his benevolent project for the last two years. I thought I could use this challenge to further sustain his endeavours.

Immigration is a recent phenomenon in Italy and Italian society, being old and static, has especially found it hard to accept these new immigrants. Sport Senza Frontiere through sports (especially Pentathlon) engages children from different ethnic, but invariably disadvantaged, backgrounds, to foster integration and mutual acceptance. I am a great believer in the power of sport to channel positive energy especially at early stage of life.

Please sponsor me for this race and give a chance to so many disadvantaged children to fulfil their potential without being marginalised for the rest of their lives because of their ethnicity, economic and social backgrounds.

Forever grateful,

Edoardo”

Edoardo, I would fully expect you of all people to do something as magnanimous as this for a wonderful cause -- so great to see! Now I expect to see an outstanding time as well! Best of luck. John
